SERVE Act Will Ensure Respect at Military Funerals
Posted on May 20th, 2011, by jhunter
Military Families United is proud to support legislation recently introduced by Senator Olympia Snowe (ME) that would help prevent disruptions at military funerals. This legislation, called the SERVE Act (Sanctity of Eternal Rest for Veterans), defines the time and place for protests at funerals, and provides clear remedies and increased penalties for conduct at military funeral services that is not protected by the First Amendment. This legislation comes in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling that protects the right to protest at a military funeral.
MFU Chairman John Ellsworth said in support of the legislation, "I applaud Senator Snowe and her colleagues for introducing a bill that protects the right of a grieving family to bury their loved one in peace. My son, Lance Corporal Justin Ellsworth, like many others, gave his life in Iraq for peace and freedom. While we must always protect and uphold the First Amendment, I believe the SERVE Act is necessary and I call on the US Senate to pass the bill and remind Americans that those who fight and die in service to our country should always receive the highest respect."
Please join us in our efforts to get this legislation passed by contacting your Senator or Congressman and urging them to vote "Yes" on this important piece of legislation.
